Why Distance Is Not the Hard Part of Driving

The hard part of driving is often not knowing how far away something is.

A child stands at the curb holding a ball. The ball bounces into the street.

Many experienced drivers are already covering the brake, because the relevant fact is not a range reading. It is that a child who just lost a ball may chase it and may not look first. Distance to the child, however precise, does not contain that inference by itself.

The ball bounces into the street.

This is a clean way to state the sensor argument. A system that measures well knows there is an object 22.4 meters ahead moving slowly. A system that reads scenes is trying to represent something closer to: that may be a child about to run.

Knowing where things are is necessary and, in many settings, already quite good. Knowing what is about to happen, and why, is a different problem — closer to meaning than to surveying.

The counterargument deserves space: a range error can still be catastrophic. If a gap is misjudged, later reasoning may not save the moment. Measured distance removes one class of late-brake mistake.

Both points can be true at once. Some teams treat understanding as the binding constraint and treat distance as something vision can estimate well enough. Other teams treat measured geometry as a shortcut worth its cost. The disagreement is about which problem is harder under a limited budget, not about whether ranging lasers work.
